Since 1^st May 2008, it has been mandatory to have a Code rating for all new homes in England.

For many new-build projects this will only require the downloading of a ‘nil certificate’ for the home information pack once the property is sold. The Code is a sustainability standard above and beyond building regulations for new domestic properties. It has six different rating levels, each representing a decrease in carbon emissions and an increase in sustainability standards across nine areas, leading to a ‘zero carbon home’ at CSH Level 6.
